Packing tips
Excess Baggage are able to supply a wide variety of robust cartons and packing cases free of charge, in many shapes and sizes. (A nominal deposit is required which is deducted from your final bill). We can supply bubble wrap and crepe paper for fragile items. Please ensure that packing materials are ordered at the time of booking.
Remember, packing is a matter of common sense, don't overload individual items (use an extra carton, they're supplied free of charge) and do use the recommended cases for large or fragile objects such as computers, televisions or hi-fis. Please use picture boxes for framed paintings and posters, and the special reinforced cartons for books. Pack delicate objects in the centre of the carton and surround with soft or protective materials. To pack bikes in their special cartons, remove the front wheel and pedals, and, turn the handlebars through 90 degrees. Professional packing is available for delicate items or very large shipments please contact us for details.
Packing service
Most clients shipping baggage and non-breakable items pack their own shipments to minimise cost. We can pack all sizes of shipment, but minimum charges for packing do apply, so it is not usually viable for us to pack shipments of less than 1 cubic metre (35 cubic feet) or 200kgs (440lbs).
If you have a large amount of furniture or other fragile/delicate items we recommend that we pack for you. Packing charges are variable dependent on size of job, complexity, and location.
If you are packing yourself, we are able to supply a wide variety of packing materials, either free, or at nominal cost in certain locations. If we pack for you we will supply all necessary materials.
One of the most critical aspects of your overseas move is the quality of the packing and the handling of your effects. Our own staff of export packers are chosen specifically for their expertise and experience, and are fully trained in the handling and packing of even your most delicate antiques or art.
All your glassware, china, crockery and crystal will be individually wrapped in paper and bubble wrap, and then packed in our special double-ply export cartons. In a recent survey, our cartons were found to be the strongest offered by a selection of removal companies, and are specifically designed for International Shipment.
Clothing can be folded and packed into cartons, placed horizontally in our lay-flat cartons, or shipped in our own specially designed hanging wardrobe cartons, depending on your preference. For delicate or fragile items such as large mirrors, statues or ornaments, we will be happy to custom build wooden crates to ensure the safe arrival of such items.
How long can I keep the boxes for?
Where we supply boxes, cartons or packing materials, you may retain them indefinitely, upon payment of a deposit of £5 (USD8) per item. Please bear in mind that cartons and packing materials remain our property until your shipment is paid for in full.
Can we use our own cartons?
We are happy to accept any strong/good quality carton or case. Please remember that cartons should be at least of thick double wall strength. Hi-fi, stereo, computer, and electrical appliance cartons etc. are normally intended for domestic distribution with items of similar weight and mass and as such are usually unsuitable for export shipment. Such items should be repacked into suitable heavy-duty cartons or packing cases.
Can I seal the cartons?
Cartons should be sealed by owners prior to dispatch. However, they may then be re-opened at our agents; or airline carriers complete discretion for security purposes only. All shipments sent by air are subject to security and/or x-ray examination, which may involve search.
How soon can you deliver packing cartons and materials, and collect my baggage?
This can be achieved in major markets (UK, Republic of Ireland, Western Europe, North America, Australia, NZ, parts of SE Asia, RSA) at 24-48 hours notice.
